VRA 'very concerned' about death threats
The media, public, Police, Government and Opposition United Bermuda Party have all come under fire from the Voters' Rights Association for a "lack of concern" over alleged death threats against election candidate Harold Darrell.
VRA is calling for people to ask their local candidates what they intend to do about Mr. Darrell's claims that he was targeted by a Government backbencher after it was discovered he leaked to the media details of Police findings of a two-year inquiry into corruption at Bermuda Housing Corporation.
Mr. Darrell, an Independent candidate for Pembroke Central, has also confirmed he was the author of the 'Son of the Soil' letter, circulated shortly after the scandal broke, which outlined evidence contained in the Police dossier.
Accusing virtually the entire Island of apathy over Mr. Darrell's claims, VRA leaders Geoff Parker and Stuart Hayward issued a statement saying: "The Voters' Rights Association is very concerned that despite the many reports by the media about threats against the life of election candidate Harold Darrell, by a Parliamentary backbencher, there appears to be minimal interest and reaction from the media, the public, the Government or the Opposition to date.
"This alleged confrontation apparently involves a member of the recently dissolved Parliament who will more than likely be standing again in the upcoming General Election.
"Threatening the life of an individual is a serious crime and must be treated as such. Any such threatening words uttered by any elected Parliamentarian, even in the heat of the moment, are not acceptable under the Parliamentary code of ethics and such person should be admonished by the Speaker of the House, sanctioned by Parliament and in no way be allowed to stand for re-election.
"Similarly, if such threats are untrue and they did not take place, then we would expect the candidate, Mr. Darrell, to withdraw. This incident demands an official response and action taken before the upcoming General Election."
