Weeks locked up for two months for courtroom rampage

Sahki Weeks left court behaving with considerably more restraint than after his previous appearance.

A defendant who yelled abuse at a Magistrate before smashing his head through a bullet-proof glass window at Hamilton Police Station has been jailed for his violent outburst.

Sahki Kenyetta Weeks, 29, charged around a courtroom shouting: "Take me to jail, take me to f****** jail!" and apparently tried to escape after Acting Magistrate Shade Subair denied him bail on Tuesday. He continued his rampage after being taken back to the station.

He had been in court after failing to answer Police bail on a charge of possession of cannabis resin. He was brought back the day after he ran amok, this time facing an additional charge of wilful and unlawful damage for breaking the window, which cost $337 to repair. He pleaded guilty to this.

"I would like to apologise for my outburst yesterday. The only reason is I have been out of jail for four or five years... I just lost it Your Honour. I'm sorry. I was doing good, working and doing good," said Weeks, 29, of Friswells Road, Pembroke. "I didn't mean to break the window. It was frustration. It was bullet-proof glass, I didn't think I was going to break it, it just shattered."

Ms Subair told the defendant, who bore no signs of injury from the window incident, that his outburst was "very unfortunate," sentencing him to two months in jail in punishment. The defendant met the news silently.

Weeks also entered pleas to a series of other charges, saying he was not guilty of possessing cannabis and possessing cocaine with intent to supply on June 22 this year in Pembroke. He will face trial on this matter at Magistrates' Court next month.

He pleaded guilty to possession of cannabis resin on May 12 in Pembroke, with Crown Counsel Cindy Clarke telling the court Police were called to the Swinging Doors club in Court Street, Hamilton, around 10 p.m. on the night in question to deal with a report of men involved in drug activity. When Weeks was searched, a lump of cannabis resin was found in his sock. Ms Subair fined him $500.
