Aids campaign to focus on risky sexual behaviour
will be unveiled tomorrow.
The drive, which will include television, radio, and printed material, was the brainchild of Health Minister the Hon. Quinton Edness who has repeatedly expressed fears that people in Bermuda, particularly the young, were not taking the deadly disease serious.
A special committee from the Advertising and Publicity Association of Bermuda (APAB), which prepared the drive, released a study in January which conjured up a picture of promiscuous teens and adults regularly bed-hopping.
It revealed that youngsters as young as 10 to 13 were having sex.
And Mr. Edness described the results as "frightening''.
Noting that AIDS was wiping out millions worldwide and spreading increasingly among heterosexuals around the world, including Bermuda, he said: "Government would really like everyone to become conscious of this and to discuss it with young people''.
Mr. Edness added that while everyone in Bermuda was aware of AIDS, some people -- particularly the young, were still practising risky behaviour.
"The only thing that society has until there is a cure is to not carry out sexual high-risk behaviour,'' he stressed.
"But I don't think the message is being received in the manner that it should. We're still not as a society paying attention.
"We have to be aware that if one generation does not protect themselves, the multiplier of that affects a lot of people. It compounds and 10 years down the road the numbers can be threefold or worse.'' The campaign, which took a year to develop, is hoped to combat this.
It targets people in the 18-to-25 age group, chairman of the APAB committee Mr. Tom Lamont said. But it applies to all engaging in risky lifestyles. And it also encourages older people to talk to youngsters.
The campaign will be unveiled at a Press conference with health, education, and advertising officials on Tuesday at the Chamber of Commerce boardroom on Front Street.
Mr. Edness and Education Minister the Hon. Clarence Terceira will give details of their departments involvement in the campaign.
