"straight'' male-female sex, it has been revealed.

A total of 33 AIDS cases were recorded by health officials in the year, latest figures show.

Eight of them, more than 24 percent, were believed to have been infected through heterosexual or "straight'' sex.

Homosexual or bisexual contact was reported in 12 cases. The total who reported injecting drugs was also 12.

Since the AIDS epidemic started in the Island, 247 people are known to have developed the syndrome.

More than 47 percent were reported as drug abusers. More than 28 percent were homosexual or bisexual men, and 19 percent were heterosexual partners of people infected with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS.

The total of 33 AIDS cases reported in 1993 compares to 21 cases in 1992. The record is 35 cases, in 1989. About 213 people are known to have died.
