The Rev. Conway Simmons is taking the post and will be replaced as the AME's presiding elder by the Rev. Malcolm Eve, Sen. Trevor Woolridge said.

The Senate sent congratulations to both ministers on their promotions.

Senators also congratulated Cabinet Secretary Mr. Leo Mills on his appointment, and paid tribute to retiring Bermuda College deans Mr. Alfred Carey and Mr. Bertram Guishard.

They also hailed new MBEs Mrs. Georgine Hill and Major Albert Benjamin, and new member of the Bermuda Bar, Mr. Anthony Philip, son of Sen. Ira Philip. The Junior Chamber's young people of 1992, Miss Valerie Young and Mr. Bruce Barritt, were also praised.

Sen. Jerome Dill sent condolences to the families of the late Mrs. Joyce Melvina Dowling and the late Mr. Henry MacDonald (Hantro) Rogers.

Sen. Norma Astwood expressed regret over the passing of plumber Mr. Morris (Teddy Bear) Lightbourne in Maryland.

Sen. Pamela Gordon sent condolences to the family of the late Mr. Henry William Francis (Digby) Lines.

And Sen. Ira Philip congratulated organisers of the VSB Sunday TV show "Parish Praise''.

He also sent condolences to the family of Mr. Cecil Parker, a member of the printing family of Mr. John Joshua Parker, former operators of a print shop on Court Street.

Mr. Parker was born in Bermuda but spent much of his life in Guyana where he has family. He was well known for 20 years in the hotel business, particularly as a shop steward for the Bermuda Industrial Union, said Sen. Philip. Much of his hotel work was in the Bermudiana Hotel.

He died at the weekend after a brief illness.
