industry, Charles Zera Mann after a brief illness.

Mr. Mann was a former general manager of the Bank of N.T. Butterfield who retired in 1979 and went on to become a chairman of the Bermuda Monetary Authority.

He was 75 and is survived by a wife Edith, and two sons Andrew and Ian and their families.

Last night, Ian Mann said his father dearly loved Bermuda and it's people, adding: "He always promoted Bermuda and its people and their best qualities.

He was a mentor to so many people.'' Mr. Mann was born in Harwick, Scotland, but brought to Bermuda at age six, receiving much of his education at Warwick Academy, in addition to two years at the Royal High School, in Edinburgh.

He worked at the bank from 1940 and was involved in the early development of Bermuda's offshore industry while promoting the Island as a reputable business jurisdiction.

In addition to the Bank and the BMA, Mr. Mann was also a director of the Bermuda Press, Belco, Bermuda Commercial Bank, and other businesses.

Mr. Mann was an avid sportsman and was past-Grand Inspector of the English Lodges of Bermuda.

Last night, Bank of Butterfield vice president and secretary to the board, Peter Rodger said he was sorry to hear of the death and said Mr. Mann would be missed.

"I knew Charlie for many years. He was much liked by everyone,'' he said.

"He was a professional banker and everyone admired him.'' Mr. Rodger said Mr. Mann was the guiding hand behind the introduction of the Bank's first computer system at a time when they were not in common use.

In addition it was Mr. Mann's wisdom behind opening the Bank's Cayman Island and Guernsey subsidiaries which "have grown to great successes'', he added.

"When he left, Charlie Mann was sorely missed by his colleagues,'' Mr. Rodger said.

Funeral arrangements have been made for Wednesday afternoon.
