The memory of Rebecca Middleton will live on in the form of a scholarship fund at Bermuda College.

Her father David said the award was the idea of local dentist Dr. Ian Campbell and confirmed that he or his former wife Cindy would present it for the first year at least.

"The bottom line is that something terrible happened and at least something good can come from it,'' said Mr. Middleton. "Then the people of Bermuda can do something in her memory and keep it going year after year.'' The award will be called the Rebecca Middleton Scholarship Memorial Fund.

The aim is to select students through the College's Best Steps programme, and not necessarily those who are academically gifted.

It will give students, who may not be able to afford it, the chance to better their education and ultimately benefit Bermuda -- whilst promoting a more peaceful society.

And it is especially targeted at Bermudians who will return to live here and plough some of the "investment'' back in to the community.

"Hopefully it will promote a peaceful society, through education. Better educated people have a tendency to be better citizens,'' said Mr. Middleton.

In Belleville, Ontario, the home of the Middletons, there are already scholarships at five locals schools in the name of Becky.
