on Friday in Magistrates' court after they pleaded guilty to various dog-related offences.

Gavin Stevens, 41, of Valley Heights Road, Devonshire was fined $100 and ordered to pay Troy Tweed $202.07 after his German Shepherd dog attacked Tweed's poodle on September 30.

Tweed's dog suffered two fractured legs in the attack and was later put down -- even after Tweed had spent $202.07 in medical expenses.

Stevens said his dog was previously licensed but that he did not have enough time to get it relicensed. He said the dog was tied when he left for work that day and must have broken the chain.

"I have given the dog up, '' he said. "So it won't happen again.'' Senior Magistrate the Wor. Will Francis fined Stevens $50 for failing to license his dog, $50 for allowing it to stray and ordered him to pay Tweed $202.07 compensation.

Daniel Levi Thomas 32, of Patience Lane, Sandys Parish, was fined $250 after his German Shepherd attacked a terrier.

The unlicenced dog was taken to the Government shelter.

A second Sandys Parish man with two previous convictions for dog related offences was fined $400 for keeping two unlicenced dogs at his home.

Vincent Nesbitt Bean, 25, of Nursery Lane, Sandys, pleaded guilty to both charges.

Neighbours complained to the dog warden about the way his dogs were behaving.

On October 8, the dogs were seized after Shelly O'Mealey complained that one of the dogs attacked her. It was then placed in the Government kennel.

Bean said he was unable to get the dogs licensed because he needed the money to pay his college tuition.

"The dogs never left the yard,'' he said."All this was brought about after a SAL truck fell into my yard and broke down the wall. I had to move the dogs to another part of the yard.'' Senior Magistrate the Wor. Will Francis fined him $200 on each charge. A Pembroke man gave up his pitbull terrier to be destroyed after it injured another dog on two occasions.

William Steede, 35, of Swan's Hill, was fined $350 and ordered to pay Mrs.

Valerie Richards $304.70 compensation and $88 to the Government. His pit bull was involved in a fight with Richard's German Shepherd on October 30. The German Shepherd needed several stiches for cuts it sustained during the fight.

One month later, Steede's dog went into Richard's yard and attacked her dog a second time. The medical expenses were estimated at $304.70.

"I didn't know my dog had gotten loose,'' Steede said, "She was following a Rottweiller that was on heat.'' Steede was fined $100 for not securing his dog on the first occasion and $200 for the second attack. Mr. Francis fined him $50 for keeping the pit bull unlicensed and ordered him to pay Mrs. Richards $304.70 in compensation and a further $88 to the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries.
