The investigation was launched last month after a series of serious accidents involving American visitors on rented bikes.

It was revealed cruise ship officials had been warning passengers not to rent cycles.

Mr. Marshall said he wanted to see whether there was a pattern with the crashes -- and whether some livery shops were accident prone.

He added the liveries were very cooperative with road safety officials carrying out the probe.

"It is a large task and will take some time to complete. I expect to get some results in a few weeks.'' Meanwhile, a new batch of tourist advice leaflets has been distributed.
