A Pembroke man who stole from a friend to buy drugs was given a 12-month prison sentence yesterday.

But Senior Magistrate the Wor. Will Francis made it concurrent to a nine-month sentence Ricardo Tucker Dill, 31, was already serving for breaching a community service order handed down for a previous theft offence.

Prosecuting, Sgt. Earl Kirby said Dill stole an envelope containing $1,320 in cash from a female friend on the night of last December 1 while she was making a call from a pay phone on Court Street.

He asked her if she could stand closer to her because it was raining, Sgt.

Kirby said. He then removed the envelope from her shoulder bag without her knowing.

A witness later told the woman what he saw and helped Police find Dill.

Duty Counsel Ms Elizabeth Christopher said Dill, who pleaded guilty to the charge, had been in a desperate situation. He had lost his job and was about to be evicted from his apartment. He also had substance abuse problem, she said.

ILLEGAL PIPE CTS Possessing a crack pipe cost a Pembroke man a $300 fine when he pleaded guilty to the offence in Magistrates' Court yesterday.

The pipe was found on Andrew Arorash, 23, around midnight last October 3 when Police searched him on Elliott Street after questioning him about an outstanding warrant, said prosecutor Sgt. Earl Kirby.

Traces of cocaine were found on the homemade pipe by the Government analyst.

Sgt. Kirby said Arorash had previous offences for possession of drugs.

CHARGE DENIED CTS A schoolboy pleaded not guilty in Magistrates' Court this week to possessing marijuana with intent to supply.

The court heard the alleged offence occurred last November in Hamilton Parish.

Dwon Smith, 17, of Pembroke was bailed in the sum of $500 plus a surety.

Magistrate the Wor. Cheryl-Ann Mapp ordered him to appear for trial at 9.30 a.m. on July 1.

PRESSMAN DIES OBT Mr. Joseph Hugh Fleck Wilkin, a long-serving employee of the Bermuda Press Limited and Island Wide Security, died last Sunday during the early morning hours. He was 70, and the father of five children.

Bermuda Press manager, Mr. Paget Wharton, said Mr. Wilkin joined the company on May 3, 1946 and retired on April 30, 1991, though he continued to work part-time until August, 1993.

Mr. Wharton said that Mr. Fleck was an excellent worker and printer who made the transition successfully from the monotype lead printing to the lithographic and letter press method.

"He had exemplary attendance and was an excellent supervisor in charge of nine people,'' Mr. Wharton said. "I had nothing but high praise for his work.
