Services spokesman Lt. Jon Thompson warned on Friday.

Lt. Thompson's advice came after an explosion at a house on Wellington Back Road in St. George's on Friday morning.

Twelve firefighters from the St. George's and Clearwater fire stations rushed to the residence shortly after 11 a.m.

Lt. Thompson said an occupant had been using contact cement which gives off a strong vapour.

The vapours collected and were ignited by the stove's pilot light.

While no-one was injured and interior smoke damage was only estimated at $30, Lt. Thompson said the situation could have been worse.

Saying some household products, including some insecticides, have flammable vapours, he added: "People need to read the labels, particular on aerosols.

"If they have to use them in abundance, they should make sure they have plenty of ventilation and turn off the gas.''
