that she told two other people that no-one had touched her.

The 11-year-old girl originally said that the man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, had rubbed himself over her private parts after she had pulled down her pants.

Magistrate Edward King also heard the girl admit that she changed her story about the location of the alleged offence.

The man, from Sandys Parish, pleaded not guilty to being a person in a position of trust, for sexual purposes did touch the body of the girl or for sexual purposes, did touch with a part of his body a young person.

Lesley Basden, prosecuting, said the offences occurred between September and October 1996.

The girl -- who gave her evidence behind a screen -- said the incident happened when she came back from school to her grandmother's house. The man was sat on the couch and she sat beside him.

He then went to some steps and called her over. It was then the incident occurred, she said.

"He did it for a little while, then he stopped. Then he went downstairs and I went downstairs -- that's all,'' she said.

A few days later the girl developed a rash and went to the doctor, and that was when the incident came to light, she said.

But later, when being questioned by defence lawyer Victoria Pearman, she admitted telling her aunt about someone interfering with her, before talking to the Police.

And she agreed that she had told a different story about the incident about somebody else.

But the girl denied that she was lying to protect someone else and that it was easier to accuse the defendant than it was the person who "really troubled her''.

"Do you remember telling your granny that no-one interfered with you and telling the doctor that no-one interfered with you, '' said Miss. Pearman. The girl replied "yes''.
