searched a US visitor who has since vowed never to return to Bermuda.

That's the view of Controller of Customs Mr. Gerry Ardis who defended his staff following more criticism this week.

He was responding to a complaint by 37-year-old Mr. Christopher Hensley from Tennessee who claims he was searched for nearly six hours before being allowed into the country.

A problem over his accommodation and the fact he was carrying just $200 in cash reportedly made Customs officers suspicious.

Mr. Hensley said that he was taken for an X-ray check and forced to provide a stool to prove he had not swallowed any drugs. He said officers found nothing despite the six hour ordeal.

Mr. Ardis said that there had been no official complaint from Mr. Hensley but he had looked into the matter. He confirmed that the search and the secondary search at the hospital had taken place.

"I am perfectly satisfied that officers had good reason to conduct the search,'' he said.

"If they had not searched him they would have failed in their responsibility.

"I am satisfied that they proceeded with professionalism and a certain amount of sensitivity.'' Senator criticises Customs chief -- See Page 6 .
