Helping build careers

Bachelor's and Master's degrees in 17 career areas of art and design. That fact, coupled with the Savannah, Georgia school's close proximity to the Island, makes it an excellent educational opportunity for those students interested in pursuing careers in those fields, said admissions officer Darrell Tutchon. The Savannah College of Art & Design is a very special school,'' he said. "The kind of education we offer here is difficult to get at state universities or other liberal arts colleges. The school is very career-oriented. We work hard to train them for jobs and to help them embark on successful careers. So we would not, for example, have a sculpture or ceramics department because it's difficult to find a career in those areas. We do take students who are interested in working in three dimensions however, and train them to be industrial designers, so they're building buildings. "We offer fine arts courses where they can take everything from painting and fibre arts to more technological programmes, like architecture or industrial design.

We also offer programmes in graphic design, computer art, and video production.'' Several Bermudians have already attended the school, said Mr.

Tutchon, as do many other students from countries outside the United States.

"One of the interesting things about our school is that we have a student body of about 3,500 and of that number, 14 percent are international students.

That means we have about 500 students from over 70 countries from around the world. We have had several students from Bermuda already, as well as some faculty members from schools in Bermuda who have come here for training.

"There are currently four students from Bermuda at the undergraduate level.

And geographically, we're approximately about 600 miles away from Bermuda and that makes us one of the closest schools to the Island. Also, because we're a small, private non-profit school, there are many advantages we can offer non-US citizens,'' he added. "Bermudians can receive any of our scholarships that we have on offer.'' A picturesque town, Mr. Tutchon said that students at the Savannah College of Art & Design receive more than just an education, even after graduation. "Savannah is one of the oldest towns in American and we're right in the historic district, so the scenery is really beautiful, the architecture is outstanding, it's really worth just coming to visit. And our students, once they graduate, we do all we can to start them on their career.

"We have a very strong alumni and they are very helpful in placing students in their respective fields. Our graduates have proven quite successful in every department, and even if our undergraduates have a specific area of work in mind as to what they want to do when they graduate, we give them the skills necessary to find a job in their field to help them work towards pursuing that goal.''
