So far it has raised $3.5 million, thanks to $1 million from the insurance industry.

The achievement was trumpeted in the Trust's November Newsletter.

In it, general chairman of the "In Trust For All'' campaign Mr. Joe Johnson praised insurance companies.

"The Trust is delighted with the response from this important segment of Bermuda's business community.'' Mr. Johnson applauded Mr. Walter A. Scott, president of ACE Insurance Ltd., who headed the insurance industry effort. "Walter Scott has been tireless in his efforts and rallied these companies to our cause.

"I want to thank him and all the contributors to this fund which is so important to preserving our island's heritage.'' The newsletter highlights major donations targeted at specific projects, many in St. George's.

These include the refurbishment of the unfinished church and the Confederate Museum/Globe Hotel.

The St. George's Chamber of Commerce has also endorsed a project at the 18th century property, Buckingham.

And a Starr Foundation grant is being used to renovate Bridge House.

In addition, the campaign is funding landscaping projects -- at the east side of Waterville, and Springfield in Somerset.

The newsletter says another goal is restoring some of the Trust's antique furniture and important paintings.
