Job-seeking Bermudians are urged to attend hospitality fair
Unemployed locals have been told to attend hospitality fair later this month to find work opportunities.Minister of Economy Kim Wilson said people should show up at the February 17 fair.“I encourage all Bermudians who are seeking employment to attend this job fair. Dress to impress. Bring your resumes. Be prepared to put your best foot forward. This is your opportunity to do what you need to do to get employed,” she said.“I stand ready to support the Bermudian workforce but please remember that the Government cannot compromise a business community already under serious pressure because of a sense of entitlement.“These are indeed tough times for all of us so please take responsibility for your future. Simply put: A lower wage is better than no wage don’t choose not to work over working for a lower than desired salary.“Get out there and go on interviews dressed appropriately and speaking clearly; and be productive, don’t stay home if it’s raining. You’re either part of the solution or part of the problem.”Sen Wilson said there were hundreds of jobs available. She added that she had not received much criticism for extending the moratorium for certain job categories.Last week Sen Wilson said no work permits would be granted for landscape gardeners, cleaners, kitchen and bar porters, housekeepers, masons and carpenters for another three months.Sen Wilson said hotel owners held a meeting last week to discuss the moratorium and they want to employ Bermudians in a variety of entry-level positions in order to capitalise on the benefits realised by having a local workforce. The Department of Labour and Training will use the event to update its database and ensure that all persons that attend the job fair are registered with them.Bermuda Hotel Association chairman John Harvey said unlike other industries there was a lot of room to manoeuvre in hospitality.“This is about getting your foot in the door,” he said. “You can start out in landscaping and move to guest services. We have people move from front desk to sales and marketing. You cannot do that as much in banks or insurance.”The fair takes place at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess between 10am and 2pm. People do not have to have a hospitality background to attend.
