A major amount of litter which had accumulated in Bermuda's roads, lanes, railway trails and surrounding foreshore was cleared away in what organisers called "the Big Sweep''.

Governor Lord Waddington and the Premier's wife Lady Swan were spotted getting down to the job at Gibbet's Bay in Smith's Parish.

Masterworks Foundation Gallery supporters also worked the site -- chosen because of its significant role in the work of artist Winslow Homer.

Bermuda Electric Light Company staff dug into the underbrush at Spanish Point Park.

KBB Clean-Up Chairwoman Ms Christine Hoskins noted the Island's scenic railway trails were covered from one end of the Island to the other.

She felt a note of success of KBB's ongoing litter awareness campaign was evident from the Bermuda Sub-Aqua Club's observations at Admiralty Cove.

Divers reported they saw a significant decrease in the usual small items like bottles and cans. But they fished up plenty of bike parts, lawn chairs and gardening equipment. A Marine Clean-Up is planned for September.

While a pleasing amount of litter was carted away, Ms Hoskins noted, "There's still more to be collected.'' She added, "Our success was really due to the tremendous help we have had, particularly from the truckers. The water bottles donated by Barritt's were a life-saver and the brooms from Butterfield Vallis were a real hit.
