"will be a long way up from (being) down''.

Keith Gordon, of Victoria Street, Pembroke, yesterday pleaded guilty to possession of drug equipment before Senior Magistrate Will Francis.

Mr. Francis fined 47-year-old Gordon $350 for possessing a pipe, a plate, a razor blade and a plastic bag, all of which were found to have traces of drugs.

Prosecutor Insp. Kenrick James told the court at 10.55 a.m. on January 10, 1997 Police went to a "certain cottage'' in Pembroke with a search warrant in Gordon's name.

Gordon dropped the pipe when a Police officer identified himself at the door.

Gordon and another man -- not before the court -- struggled with Police for a short time when they entered the room to continue the search.

Insp. James said the other items were found nearby and Police asked Gordon what they were used for.

"You know what they are used for,'' Gordon told Police. "I use them for using drugs.'' Yesterday Gordon denied that he had struggled with Police, and Insp. James told Mr. Francis: "There is an admission that he is a drug user, your Worship.'' Gordon told Mr. Francis: "I've been attending Addiction Services.

"Through the NDC (National Drug Commission), they were trying to get me into a programme abroad, but because of my convictions I haven't been able to go,'' he added. "It would be a lie that I have been cured,'' Gordon said. "It will be a long way up from down.'' "Yes, that's an eloquent way to put it,'' Mr. Francis replied. "Very eloquent.'' Gordon also told Mr. Francis that he had just started a job on Monday before being arrested on a warrant.

"It was hard enough for the people to give me a job because of the publicity,'' he said. "As soon as I started the job I got arrested.'' On Tuesday, Magistrate Edward King sentenced Gordon to a default prison sentence of 60 days for failing to pay a $700 fine for separate charges of possessing drug equipment on June 29.

Before giving Gordon a deadline to pay the fine for the January 10 offence, Mr. Francis said: "Taking your situation into account, which we don't have to go into detail on, pay by May 29.''
