The 51-year-old, who has not been named, is in stable condition in the Intensive Care Unit at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital, after the incident at Flanagan's on Front Street early on Saturday.

A Police spokesman said the man became involved in a scuffle with staff at the restaurant and fell down the stairs with the manager, who was not injured.

The man had returned to the premises after staff had escorted him and his son out, following a small fracas in the bar.
