But the victim still ended up in the intensive care unit at the hospital with serious head injuries.

It was one of two attacks in Court Street early yesterday with both victims ending up in hospital.

Police are investigating both incidents which involved the victims suffering serious head injuries.

The first occurred just after midnight when a 20-year-old Hamilton Parish man was in the car park at the junction of Court Street and Angle Street.

Police said: "The victim was with two friends when he was abruptly approached by two males who immediately started punching and kicking him about his body.

"Efforts were made by persons in the area to stop this attack but the suspects continued their assault.'' The two men finally stopped the attack and fled when they saw the Police arriving on the scene.

The victim was still in a serious condition in the intensive care unit of the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital last night.

Police community relations officer Sgt. Roseanda Jones said: "Although we have received some information about this attack, we are still anxious to speak with anyone who can assist in this investigation.

A 16-year-old Pembroke man has been arrested in connection with the incident.

Just before 5 a.m. yesterday, a 31-year-old man reported that he was attacked by an armed man for refusing to give up a cigarette.

Sgt. Jones said: "His attacker beat him about the body with a piece of wood.

"He sustained two wounds to the back of his head which required six sutures to close.'' The man has been detained in the hospital under observation. Police are again seeking information.

Police also report that a 33-year-old Devonshire man has been arrested and is expected to appear in court concerning recent robberies of taxi drivers.

Over the past week four robberies have taken place including two which saw more than $300 stolen.

Detectives have not ruled out the possibility that all four incidents are related.
