He was responding to National Liberal Party demands that Government restore more frequent collection in the wake of the Devonshire North by-election.

Residents had complained of foul smells and insects due to bags of rotting garbage which had been left on roadsides because there was no where else to store them.

Mr. Gibbons said the department had determined that once-a-week garbage collection was working well around the Island and planned to stick with it.

But Mr. Gibbons added the community had a part to play in alleviating the situation by separating garbage at its source through the use of recycling and composting.

By disposing food scraps to compost one got good soil and cut down on smell, and recycling was good for the environment.

NLP chairman Charles Jeffers said: "Residents must be vigilant to ensure that if possible no dumping takes place in their areas and if there are dumping problems they are reported to the proper authorities.
