Parents voice their education concerns
schools at the first of three Bermuda National Parent Teacher Association meetings last week.
National PTA officials said parents attended the meeting at St. Anne's Church in Southampton in droves, clamouring to have their opinions heard on the future education of their children.
"There was a very definite feel amongst parents that there was no burning desire to implement these school reforms in a way that is meaningful to parents,'' said Bermuda National PTA treasurer, Ms Cheryl Ann Lister.
"They asked to have these meetings to express their views and approach the minister at the end.'' The meeting for parents and teachers in the Western Zone from Sandys to Paget was the first of three. This week the central and eastern parishes will invite parents and teachers, including those from the private sector, to discuss Government plans for restructuring the school system.
"The meeting was well attended by parents of schools in that area,'' reported vice-president of the PTA, Mr. Daniel Robinson. "There was full participation in the discussions by those in attendance.'' Among topics discussed were the mainstreaming the senior high school at Prospect and the overall restructuring of the system.
Problems within the primary schools and the Dellwood/Northlands issue were also debated.
Mr. Robinson reported a consensus was reached by those present on all issues but could not provide further details. He added the Bermuda National PTA was awaiting the outcome of the other two meetings before taking a course of action.
