Hamilton, is nearing completion.

The facility, which will cost up to $200,000 when finished, is part of a scheme to completely rejuvenate wasteland next to the site of the former Pembroke Dump.

When complete, there will be a nature reserve, riverside area, soccer pitch, lawned area, amphitheatre and basketball court. The total budget for the area is $500,000.

No building will actually take place on the dump itself, but the area will be grassed and fenced off in due course.

Park planner Anne Boykin-Smith said the playground equipment had already arrived and the tenders for the installation work were currently being prepared.

It is hoped that the playground would be open by June, she said.

When the playground is open, then work will move on to other areas, including cleaning-up the canal side and the renovation of a building into restrooms, complete with disabled access.

Ms Boykin-Smith added that the new park could become a focal point for the area, and made a plea for the community to get involved with the scheme, to ensure it is not vandalised.
