A Southampton man enjoying the day out on the water with his son ran into problems on Saturday when his new 14-foot boat ran out of gas.

Their difficulty increased when their hand held VHF radio ran out of power.

Harbour Radio spokesman Mr. Scott Simmons said the station received a very weak call from Mr. Gordon Burland at about 7 p.m. on Saturday saying that he was out of fuel but then his radio signal faded out.

Mr. Simmons said he reported the incident and asked boaters to keep an eye out for the troubled craft.

He said the station then received a call from Mr. Burland's father, Mr. John Burland, who said his daughter-in-law had called and told him that his son had not returned when he said he would.

Mr. Burland had told his wife that he was going to be in Hamilton Harbour and the Great Sound so his father told Harbour Radio that he was going to look for him there.

Mr. Burland found his son and grandson Tim about half a mile away from Cavello Bay in Sandy's Parish at 9.15 p.m. and towed them to safety.

Mr. Gordon Burland told The Royal Gazette yesterday that he was not used to the new boat's gas gauge which was why he ran into trouble but said he and his son were all right.

PETITION TO PROTEST TIM SMITH HOA Petition to protest Tim Smith A man who led a small demonstration against Premier David Saul's decision to keep Mr. Tim Smith in Cabinet now plans to circulate a petition protesting the move.

Mr. Cromwell Shakir said yesterday he planned to have the petition on the street this week.

Dr. Saul did take Mr. Smith out of the Environment post, but kept the young Minister in Cabinet, moving him to the Ministry of Youth and Sport.

Ms Pamela Gordon was moved to Environment from Youth and Sport.

Mr. Shakir, a member of the Progressive Labour Party, earlier led a three-man demonstration outside the House protesting Dr. Saul's decision.
