The Development Applications Board has given the go-ahead to the Bull's Head car park in Hamilton.

Work on the Corporation of Hamilton's venture should start before the end of the year.

The three-storey building will have 720 parking spaces, and cost several million dollars.

Three roads lead into Bull's Head -- Canal Road, Laffan Street, and Serpentine Road.

Yesterday Corporation secretary Mr. Roger Sherratt was delighted at the planning approval.

He said it would be a huge boon for Hamilton motorists, frustrated by the constant battle for spaces.

"Parking is a major problem in Hamilton, and this will help to ease traffic problems in the city.

"The next step is to come up with detailed plans for the car park.'' Mr. Sherratt did not know how much the scheme would cost, but added it would run into millions of dollars.

He said financing for the project would be sought as soon as possible.

"I am optimistic we will be able to get construction under way some time in 1994, probably the latter part of the year.'' The DAB attached several conditions to their approval. These include: A building permit must be approved before construction starts; The site must be properly landscaped; and The corporation must review traffic flows around the car park.

Planners also urged the Corporation to consider lighting and security.

Mr. Sherratt said the car park would be above the ground, and the top section open.

He stressed the development would be made as attractive as possible.

It would be adequately landscaped to prevent it being an eyesore.

Mr. Sherratt added the Corporation was anxious to meet potential traffic problems.

And it had built an extension at Dundonald Street to "service the car park''.

"I should also point out the proposed car park will be in the outskirts of the City.'' The site was chosen because the Dick traffic report -- commissioned by Government and the Corporation -- deemed it most suitable.
