The Bermuda Police Service yesterday announced the provision to all officers of the vests after five years of research.

Officers will be able to carry radios, batons, handcuffs and other equipment in easy to reach and open pockets in an easy to put on and remove style vest.

The vests differ from US style bullet proof vests in that they provide protection from knife attacks. Sharp edged weapons are more difficult to protect against than bullets.

In addition the vests are worn over clothing rather than under clothing.

Bermuda Police Association Chairman, Insp. Michael DeSilva said: " We are encouraged by the steps taken by the executive management to ensure the safety of our officers.

"These vests represent some of the best equipment available to Police officers around the world,'' he added.

Acting Deputy Commissioner Jonathan Smith, who is also chairman of the Officer Safety Committee, welcomed the vests' introduction as well.

"This new equipment is the result of five years hard work and research,'' he said. "It sends two clear messages to Police officers. Firstly, that they are considered very important to the Service and also that they deserve to be adequately protected while out doing their job.''
