Police watch drunk driver crash into wall

in Paget. Officers had been following Robert Ian Hughes along Middle Road after seeing him sway from side to side on his auxiliary cycle. And they watched as he drove into a wall at the entrance of Dudley Hill. In Magistrates' Court yesterday, prosecutor Insp. Peter Duffy said that Hughes, 21, appeared unsteady on his feet, had glazed eyes and slurred speech. Police could also smell liquor on his breath. Hughes admitted having "a couple of beers'' and, later, failed a breathalyser test at Hamilton Police Station.

Magistrate the Wor. John Judge fined him $400 and disqualified him from driving for 12 months. Also pleading guilty to driving while impaired was Colin Hammond Harvey, 37, of Valley View Lane, Pembroke. Insp. Duffy said that Harvey had been seen by Police officers parked at the Esso Gas Station in Richmond Road, Hamilton. He said: "They saw him enter the gas station and he was unsteady on his feet. He fell against the door as he entered.'' Harvey then got into a car and drove along Richmond Road. Police again noticed that the car was swerving from the kerb to the centre line of the road. When he was eventually stopped on Rosemont Avenue, Harvey got out of the car. He was unsteady, with glazed eyes and the officers could smell liquor on his breath.

Harvey was taken to Hamilton Police Station where he failed a breathalyser test. Mr. Judge fined him $400 and disqualified him from driving for a year.*l
