The initiative took its first step at a meeting last week for parents of youth already participating in the Island-wide Parent Resource Institute for Drug Education scheme -- or PRIDE.

More than 30 adults were on hand for the inaugural discussion and will now form a focus group to network with other parents involved in PRIDE, said programme director Patricia Pogson.

There are already 11 PRIDE groups working in primary, middle and senior schools.

Ms Pogson said the plan was to actively involve parents in their children's activities and build a "PRIDE family tree''.

Ultimately, the group wants "PRIDE in every parish '' to act as a prevention source against alcohol and drug use.

"We want to provide safe, age-appropriate activities that are well chaperoned by their parents for our youth in alcohol, tobacco and drug free environments,'' said Ms Pogson.
