The apparent split between the groups could threaten the success of a mass lobby of Parliament planned for today.

Campaigners against the Stubbs proposal, which would make gay sex legal, are holding a demonstration in case MPs discuss the bill.

They are holding a prayer vigil outside the House of Assembly from noon today.

The organiser of the vigil is the Christian Coalition, set up by church leaders opposed to removing the legal ban on gay male sex.

In recent months it has combined with the religious group Valiant Ex-Gay Ministry, which claims to represent "former homosexuals''.

Coalition spokesman Mr. Ouemonde Brangman told The Royal Gazette that members of Valiant Ex-Gay Ministry would "probably join with us''.

But he said his group did not want to be portrayed as close allies of Valiant.

"Those guys can at times get very aggressive,'' he said.

Mr. Brangman said people opposed to the Stubbs bill should assemble on the steps of the Sessions House, wearing white ribbons.

"We're looking to get as many people that are in support of case there.

"We're somewhat afraid of politicians making decisions on moral issues. We want them to know we're leaving it in God's hands.'' He said the coalition's campaign was not about "going against any group of people''.

"It's about us standing up for what we believe in.''
