Saul defends Major visit
on ways of easing Bermudians' access to Britain.
But he told the House of Assembty on Friday that the visit, proposed for January, was not a formal one and he denied he was ignoring "Cabinet, Parliament and the Consitution''.
He added that Mr. Major may not be interested, but that "I would be interested in just discussing it with him, unofficially, off the record and informally, as it is not exactly his portfolio.'' He added that he would like to explore whether Bermudians could enter the UK more easily, as they and Canadians can do in the US without having to have a visa.
Dr. Saul added: "That would be very beneficial and it's nothing to do with the Constitution.'' He added that if there was a possiblilty that young Bermudians could advance their professional career by being allowed to work for periods in the UK, that would help advance their careers at home.
But he added that he was prepared to bet that Bermuda would never get Metropolitan status within the UK and Independence as well.
