scholarships to the Bermuda College for public high school students will be funded.

Sen. Scott did emphasise, however, that the monies will come in addition to the regular awards and scholarships given by his Ministry.

"Government will fund those scholarships and it will be in addition to the ones currently printed in the budget,'' he said yesterday.

"Government is offering these scholarships as a special one-off situation as we did not feel it fair to deny students who had worked hard toward it and were depending on it.'' The amount of money involved has not yet been determined as the school year has not yet ended.

To be eligible, students had to sustain a 95-percent attendance record, and maintain at least a "B'' average.

This year close to $2m is available locally in scholarships for students pursuing studies overseas. The Education Ministry has set aside a total of $1,255,000.

The funds will be divided for further education awards, six teacher training awards of $7,500 each and eight $12,500 Government scholarships.
