Ms Smith, MP for St. George's North, was voted in by an overwhelming majority early this morning at the PLP conference at Alaska Hall.

"It was a decisive win, although I can't tell you by what margin,'' said PLP spokeswoman Ms Paula Cox. She added Mr. Frederick Wade was confirmed as leader unopposed.

Also re-elected were Mr. Victor Fishington as party chairman, and Ms Marie Richards as his deputy.

"I, myself, was re-elected at the party's public relations officer,'' Ms Cox said. The election of officers was started at about 11.15 p.m. last night, and was still continuing at Press time shortly after 12.20 a.m. Among those still to be elected were six central committee delegates.
