Spanswick returns to the UBP fold
Charles Spanswick who stormed out of the party in 1991.
Mr. Spanswick had been a member of the UBP since it was formed but became dissatisfied with Government's "high handed approach.'' When he split from the party he attempted to rally other right wing members to run as Independent candidates in the next election, but failed to spark a strong response.
Mr. Spanswick, well known for his campaign work for the UBP, said: "I had a long and frank discussion with the Premier and I will now rejoin the party.
"Things have changed recently and I believe the UBP will win the next election, but it will be a tight squeeze. I am again willing to help them.'' In 1991 Mr. Spanswick said that he was fed up with the UBP and not "taken'' by the Progressive Labour Party or the National Liberal Party.
At the time he said: "I feel a group of Independents would keep Government in check. Government has done nothing for the people of Sandys South and their PLP MPs, Walter Lister and Walter Roberts, have done nothing for them either.'' He expressed concern at that time about widespread drug trafficking and poor roads.
During his talk with the Premier last week he said he discussed dirty beaches, trash on Happy Valley Road, education and finance.
