Students' yearly registration is delayed by two weeks The Education Ministry has delayed annual registration for students at all levels of the public

A spokesman this week explained that the delay was due to an administrative review of "admission policies and procedures, to bring them all into line with one another as part of the educational reform process''.

Therefore registration will be held on February 17, 18, and 19 rather than this week.

Forms needed for the registration process will be available at the Ministry and in all post offices as of February 12, and at all schools as of February 15.

INTERNET PROVIDER STAYS TIGHT LIPPED BUC Internet provider stays tight lipped The Island's first Internet provider remained tight lipped after a day long battle against a computer glitch.

The Royal Gazette understands that numerous customers of Logic Communications were blocked from Internet access on Wednesday when a glitch -- the nature of which a spokesman refused to identify -- blocked access for several hours.

Chief financial officer Neil Speight refused to discuss the matter other than to say: "We have had a minor technical issue that affected less than three percent of our customer base.'' When asked how many customers Logic has, and the cause of the problem, Mr.

Speight said: "I don't think the issue warrants any further discussion.

One customer said the company was certain to have had a "big problem locally'' after he had difficulty contacting Logic's computers by phone.

"With automatic re-dialling, the telephone company is going to make a fortune in overcalls being added to customers' telephone bills,'' the man joked.

"Their machine just kept hanging up.'' WARNING TO CONVERTIBLE CAR OWNERS CRM Warning to convertible car owners Convertible owners should be on the lookout for a bold thief with a novel approach to stealing.

He simply unzips the top of the car.

A Police spokesman said a brief case was stolen from a car parked on Washington Street, Pembroke on Tuesday afternoon.

"The culprit gained easy access into the vehicle by unzipping the soft convertible top of the car,'' according to a Police report.

Police are investigating the incident and reminding drivers to conceal valuables left in unattended cars.

POLICE INVESTIGATE FIGHT NEAR CLUB CRM Police investigate fight near club Police are investigating a reported large fight outside an undisclosed Hamilton night club on Wednesday morning.

Officers discovered a crowd of 40 people outside the club, but were told the brawl finished before their arrival.

They later questioned the club's management about the incident.

Fire caused $3,000 worth of damage A fireplace caused $3,000 worth of damage when it set fire to a wooden floor of a Pembroke home.

A Bermuda Fire Service spokesman said the brick fireplace was sitting directly above the floor in an old Bermuda home at First Avenue, Shelton Road.

But heat was transferred downwards through the brick bottom and eventually ignited the floor, he said.

Two vehicles and ten firefighters attended the scene around 5:30 a.m. on Wednesday.

The spokesman warned other homeowners with similarly constructed fireplaces to ensure fires were fully extinguished before going to bed.

FOUNTAIN SUES TO LEAVE REGIMENT MIL CTS Fountain sues to leave Regiment Artist Brett Fountain is suing the Bermuda Regiment in a bid to be freed from his Army service.

Pte. Fountain, halfway through his three-year service, wants an unconditional discharge so he can concentrate on his business.

But the Regiment's Commanding Officer, Lt. Col. Patrick Outerbridge, will not allow his request.

Mr. Fountain was unavailable for comment, after issuing a writ through his lawyers at Trott and Duncan.

He filed a similar writ in June 1996, against the Attorney General under the Defence Act.

But Regimental Adjutant Capt. Eddie Lamb said: "There are many soldiers who are in similar predicaments, working for high-flying businesses. They still have to serve.'' It is understood Mr. Fountain, who has international acclaim for his wildlife paintings, claims his Army service places too much of a strain on his art business.

Senior Regiment officers have already received a faxed version of the writ.
