Swan hits out at PLP

and education policies.

The Hon. Sir John Swan said Government had tried to ensure the whole community benefited -- not just segments of it.

And he accused the Progressive Labour Party of failing to back community policies.

"Government will continue with its sound policy of seeking to build a community consensus, and hopefully when the PLP begins to understand, that Bermudian voters will continue to regard their party as ill prepared to lead this Island, because of their `politics of abstinence', they will perhaps move from the position of tearing down the Bermudian edifice, to one of joining hands and building an even better model together.'' Sir John rejected allegations his Task Force of Employment consisted mainly of the Chamber of Commerce.

He pointed out Opposition MPs Mr. Ottiwell Simmons and Mr. Eugene Blakeney were involved.

Sir John went on to refute claims Government had failed to ensure training for Bermudians.

This ignored the substantial curriculum at the Bermuda College, which also offered retraining.

And Sir John underlined the "interaction'' between the Employment Task Force and the Education Planning Team.

Teachers were among those included in discussions -- and recommendations were expected shortly, said Sir John.

"During the interim, it is safe to assume that Government will unveil a coherent schedule of recommendations, which will set out clearly the future direction of opportunities for Bermuda.'' On the industrial front Sir John pointed out Wellbottom had been developed fully, despite PLP sniping.

And Dockyard was a "perfect model of the extent to which history, entertainment, retail and tourism have been fused into a wonderful blend.''
