Taxi damaged in robbery attempt

A taxi driver escaped unhurt after two passengers tried to rob him and then allowed his vehicle to roll down an embankment, causing serious damage.

A taxi driver escaped unhurt after two passengers tried to rob him and then allowed his vehicle to roll down an embankment, causing serious damage.

The incident happened on Saturday afternoon after a 63-year-old driver picked up two men and took them to Spice Hill Road, Warwick. There, the driver was directed to a secluded area close to Westmount Lane where the pair tried to take money from his pocket.

The taxi operator got out of the vehicle and escaped on foot.

The culprits then released the handbrake of the vehicle and let it roll away.

YOUNG PASSENGER HURT AC Young passenger hurt A pillion passenger suffered a broken foot after she was involved in an accident with a car.

The nine-year-old girl, who was travelling on the rear of the bike ridden by her mother, was hurt after the cycle was in collision with a Volkswagen Scirocco car at the junction of Woodlands Road and Canal Road.

The incident on Saturday at 3.30 p.m. also left the girl's mother with a bruised leg.

HANDBAG SNATCHED CRM Handbag snatched A motorcycle thief made off with a handbag after an incident at the Shelly Bay playground on Saturday morning.

A 26-year-old woman left her handbag on a wall while playing with her children. Whilst she was distracted, a youth rode up on a motorcycle and took the bag.

Another cyclist gave chase but the culprit escaped. The bag contained cash and personal items.

DARRELL TRIAL DATE SET CTS Darrell trial date set Lorenzo (Toronto) Darrell will have his day in court on March 1 in the retrial of charges that he attacked a Policeman.

On October 16, Darrell's appeal to the Supreme Court was upheld and his case was ordered back to Magistrates' Court.

Darrell originally pleaded guilty to the charges in June but acting Puisne Judge Michael Mello found the magistrate did not allow Darrell to choose between a Supreme Court or a summary trial.

On Friday, Magistrate Edward King set three charges of causing grievous bodily harm to a Policeman "with intent to prevent lawful detention'' on February 5 in Warwick.

And Mr. King was careful to ask Darrell, 33, of Random Lane, Warwick, where he wished for the case to be heard before taking down a not guilty plea.

TRAINING FOR TEACHERS ED Training for teachers Four visiting education professors will be the focus of a training day for Saltus teachers.

The theme is differentiated learning and the keynote speech will be by King's College, London professor Dr. Meg Maguire.

The talks will be about learning via flexible classroom concepts, allowing students of different abilities to be taught together.

The day, scheduled for November 6, will also feature Elizabeth Wood, senior lecturer in education at the University of Exeter, Malcolm Davison, headmaster and Lynne Juniper, senior teacher at Bishop Fox's Community School in Taunton, Somerset.

COMMITTEE FORMED CON SR Committee formed Bermuda is to have its own committee as part of plans to mark the United Nations International Year of Older Persons.

Former Cabinet Minister Sir John Plowman is to head the forum as part of the Island's involvement in the event, which aims to raise awareness of a growing ageing population and its harmonisation into society.

The committee will decide how to become a part of the year, titled Towards a Society for All Ages.

Also serving on the Bermuda committee will be Dr. B. W. Whalley, Claudette Fleming, Dorothy Evans, George Leon Burt, Suzanne Mahon, Dr. Khin Maung Myint, Mrs. Margaret Swan, Joy Leman and Jacqueline Lightbourne.
