Teacher earns top marks in Tennessee

Tennessee, has been honoured for his devotion to his fifth grade class at the Calvin Donaldson Elementary School in Chattanooga.

Former Sandys Secondary physical education teacher, Mr. Charles Joynes, was recently presented with an Outstanding Teaching Award from the Southside Branch of the Chattanooga Area Chamber of Commerce.

Mr. Joynes, son of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Joynes of Devonshire, left the Island in 1991 to join his wife Lisa in the United States.

A press release said Mr. Joynes strived to go beyond teaching the basics, integrating "life learning experiences'' into his courses. He has taught his students Spanish, as well as the importance of etiquette and good manners.

Mr. Joynes makes special efforts to involve parents in their children's education, and often uses his own funds to purchase learning aides, art supplies and other materials, the release added.

He often treated his students to dinner, bowling and other activities they might not otherwise experience.

The 34-year-old teacher has managed to keep ties with Bermuda's education system by forming a partnership between his class and a local school class.

Mr. Joynes has also continued his involvement with athletics in Tennessee.

In addition to coaching the Chattanooga United under-19 boys soccer team and the Hixson High School soccer team, Mr. Joynes is a member of US National Soccer Coaches Association and is a qualified state and national referee.
