Jason Smith, of Sunnyside Park, Southampton, had originally pleaded not guilty to assaulting P.c. Robin Hollinsid on July 22 in Warwick.

But as his trial was scheduled to get underway yesterday, he changed his plea to guilty.

Police prosecutor Sgt. Anthony Mouchette said Smith was pulled over for speeding at 62 kph on Middle Road, Warwick around 9.30 p.m.

Minutes later, another vehicle was pulled over for another offence, Sgt.

Mouchette said.

But when the car driver was only given a warning, Smith became irate at the Police officer who was issuing his ticket.

When the officer then took the keys out of Smith's ignition to stop him from driving away, Sgt. Mouchette said Smith started pushing him in the chest.

But Smith told Magistrate Arthur Hodgson that he was not purposely pushing the officer. He said he was trying to get his keys back.

Sgt. Mouchette suggested that Smith receive a conditional discharge as he had not caused any physical harm to the officer.

Mr. Hodgson granted Smith a one-year conditional discharge.
