Square, St. George's, partying to live music and watching stunning fireworks.

Organisers said unsettled weather could have been to blame for a lower-than-usual attendance.

But a smaller crowd did not affect the atmosphere, they said, and revellers stayed longer after midnight.

Police expressed their thanks to the public after an event free of reported incidents.

"I was at the square -- it went quite well,'' said town mayor the Wor. Henry Hayward.

Corporation activities chairman Ms Mariea Caisey said: "Everything went fine and everybody had a good time.'' But she was disappointed at the amount of donations from the crowd in support of the event.

Less than $1,000 was collected, she estimated. "It's nowhere near what we need.''
