The Motor Car Amendment Act 1995 is one of two transport bills set to be debated today.

Community and Culture Minister the Hon. Wayne Furbert, who has responsibility for small business, said some taxi drivers do not require two-way radios, and the change is expected to save each of them fees of $97 a month.

But Mr. Joe L. Brown, spokesman for the Bermuda Taxi Owners Union, said the amendment would not help the taxi industry.

While a majority of drivers surveyed might have favoured the change, only taxi owners should have been asked, Mr. Brown said. "A radio is vital,'' he said.

Mr. Brown called on Transport Minister the Hon. Maxwell Burgess to delay passage of the bill until the executive of the owner's union has had a chance to discuss it fully.

Also up for debate is the Insurance Amendment Act 1995, recently tabled by Finance Minister the Hon. David Saul.

With the Budget Debate completed, Government plans to deal with those three pieces of legislation before moving on to debate the Green Paper on Independence next Friday, and the Independence Referendum Act 1995 the following Friday, on March 24. The House then rises for the Easter Break.

Deputy Premier the Hon. Irving Pearman has said one day might not be enough to debate the Independence Green Paper, and an extra sitting might have to be scheduled between March 17 and 24.
