challenges yesterday to the seats of the Mayor and three common councillors.

Retired contractor Mr. Gladstone Trott was again nominated to run against Old Town Mayor the Wor. Henry Hayward.

Mr. Trott lost by 65-176 votes in the 1991 municipal elections.

And Mr. Kenny Bascome, Mr. David Raine and Mr. Louis DeSilva were nominated for common councillor posts.

They will run against incumbents Mr. Leon (Jimmy) Williams PLP, Mr. E. Michael Jones and Mr. Terry Roberts, who sought re-election.

Mr. Shirley Gibbons and Mr. Randolph Dowling announced they would be retiring from their posts.

None of the three Aldermen and women's posts were contested.

Mr. Hayward said he welcomed Mr. Trott's challenge.

He added: "Any election is a threat. I am just surprised he is coming back for a third time.'' Author and historian Mr. Raine, owner of the Bridge House Art Gallery, said he wanted to serve as one of the Town's five common councillors because he believed strongly in the preservation of its history.

It will be Mr. Raine's second run for a Corporation seat.

Despite his previous loss, he said he was pleased with the show of support considering it had been his first time.

Mr. DeSilva is the head of Hi-Span Construction, which yesterday finished building the new cruise ship terminal at Ordnance Island.

Having lived in St. George's his whole life, he was familiar with its problems and felt he could be of value to his community, he said.

Mr. Bascome, an outspoken beach house operator and shop owner, was off the Island yesterday.

But his views on St. George's are well known in the community from his regular attendance at town meetings and comments on radio talk shows.

Election day has been set for May 26.

Mr. Hayward will carry with him to the polling station several recent accomplishments.

The new St. George's-only cruise liner will be sailing into the Town's Harbour on May 30, hopefully ending years of complaining over the twin-port concept.
