Two-lane access planned for new Pembroke seniors school
Government this week revealed plans to make the road leading to the upcoming multi-million dollar senior school "as attractive as East Broadway.'' Works and Engineering Minister the Hon. Ann Cartwright DeCouto said plans were underway to expand Gymnasium Road in Pembroke and make it a two-lane road with plants along the medium.
The expansion, she explained, would improve access to the 19-acre former Devonshire Academy site at Prospect.
The junction between Frog Lane and Montpelier Road would also be improved, Mrs. Cartwright DeCouto said.
Excavation work in the area began earlier this week and is expected to take a month.
And a 25-foot cut will be made in the embankment bordering Frog Lane and Gymnasium Road.
The road work begins as demolition of buildings at Prospect continue.
All the buildings, except Ruth Seaton James Auditorium, are expected to be knocked down in six months to make room for the construction of a "state-of-the-art'' senior secondary school which is scheduled to open in September, 1997.
This week drawings for the new school were also on display at the Works and Engineering offices.
And both Mrs. Cartwright DeCouto and Education Minister the Hon. Clarence Terceira praised the plans.
Noting that the school will be surrounded by greenery, Mrs. Cartwright DeCouto said: "The impact of the massing of the building will be lessened by the greenery and contours of the structure.'' Rooms in the school, which will serve more than 700 students, include 22 regular classrooms, specialist rooms, a gymnasium, and a cafeteria.
There will also be adequate parking around the site, Dr. Terceira said, including 800 spots for cycles.
Buses will drop children off at the school's main entrance.
Summing up the plans, Mrs. Cartwright DeCouto said not only would the area be improved, but rubble from the school site and road works would be used to cover the Pembroke Dump, while wood, metals, and other materials would be reused.
