Mr. Dill, a law partner at Appleby, Spurling & Kempe, was approved by acclamation after a short speech to fellow United Bermuda Party MPs.

None of his colleagues chose to question him before approving him in the post, Mr. Dill told The Royal Gazette .

Mr. Dill, who sees his role as helping to unify the UBP caucus that was fractured over Independence, remained publicly neutral on the issue during the lead-up to the August 16 referendum. He was the only MP nominated for Deputy Premier by the deadline of midnight Tuesday.

A secret ballot election that was scheduled for today has been cancelled. Mr.

Dill, 35, was named Minister or Education and Human Affairs by Premier the Hon. David Saul on Tuesday.

First elected to the House of Assembly in Pembroke West Central in 1993, Mr.

Dill was soon named Minister of Human Affairs and Information. He served in the Senate from May of 1992 until he was elected to Parliament.

He joned AS&K as a commercial litigation attorney in 1986 and became a partner in 1991.

A former deputy chairman of the UBP, he has also served on the Human Rights Commission and the Road Safety Council and has been active in the Chamber of Commerce.

The Deputy Premier, which is not provided for in Bermuda's Constitution, is effectively the MP at the right hand of the Premier, and is normally the first MP in line to act for the Premier when he travels abroad.

Education Minister, was the only MP nominated for the position.
