US library gets a boost from Bermuda residents’ generosity
Libraries in Minneapolis don’t generally get post from Bermuda; more unlikely is that the letter contained a cheque for $13,500.That is exactly what happened to Stillwater Public Library when Bermudian residents Patrick and Jane Thiele decided to help out the local library.Mr Thiele retired as PartnerRe’s chief executive officer in December. Soon afterwards he told The Royal Gazette he planned to return to his home in Stillwater.Library director Lynne Bertalmio told her local paper, the Star Tribune, she didn’t know much about the Thieles other than they were part-time residents of Bermuda and Stillwater and said in their letter that they “love libraries.”Their letter stipulated the money was to be used to expand the library’s weekend hours.Three years ago the library had to cut its weekend hours after a budget shortfall.Starting next week they will open from 1pm to 5pm on Sundays thanks to the cheque.Mr Thiele retired after a decade leading PartnerRe, he was pivotal in growing the company into a top-five global reinsurer.
