The New York woman recalled from her hospital bed the terrifying accident which left her lying unconscious in the road early on Sunday morning.

She is now receiving treatment for a broken leg, nose, wrist and a fractured shoulder after a car slammed into her moped on South Road between Harmony Hall and the Paget traffic lights.

The woman, who does not wish to be named, told The Royal Gazette she was travelling in the direction of Hamilton at about 4 a.m. when she saw a blue car speeding towards her on the wrong side of the road.

"I was riding my bike and my friends were in a cab behind me.

"I had just seen the traffic lights when I saw the car. It came directly at me and sped into me,'' she said. "Then I was lying on the road trying to lean up when I saw a man get out of the car.

"He came to me and said: `I'm sorry Miss, I was on the wrong side'. Then he got back into the car and took off.'' The culprit, she said, was a tall, white man wearing makeup who was possibly on his way home from a Hallowe'en party.

Friends travelling in a taxi behind her immediately called for help. But the driver of the blue car was nowhere to be seen.

The woman, who was due to return to New York on Monday, said it was likely traces of red paint from her moped, destroyed in the collision, were still on the car.

The car's headlight was probably smashed, she said, because a large amount of glass was scattered over the road at the scene of the accident.

The Police are appealing to the driver of the car to come forward as well as other witnesses of the accident, Police spokesman, Sgt. Roseanda Jones said.
