The $408 million facility at London's Heathrow Airport represents the airline's biggest single investment beyond its actual airplanes.

The building was one of the largest construction projects in Britain this year. More than 890,000 square feet, the new cargo centre can accommodate 6,000 double decker buses inside.

Bob Ayling, British Airways' Chief Executive, said the airline is beginning to recognise the importance of cargo to its operation.

"The airline industry has traditionally under-estimated the value of cargo, but that is no longer the case at British Airways,'' he said.
