last summer and sexually assaulting her, said the woman told him to visit her anytime even though she knew he was married.

Yesterday, the man said he had met and spoken to the woman on two occasions before the alleged offence took place on July 25, 1993.

However this contradicts earlier testimony from the woman who denies ever meeting, talking or walking home with the man.

She said that the night of the alleged sexual assault was the first time they had ever met. During his hour and a half on the stand in Magistrates' Court, the man said he had spoken to the woman at a party on June 12, and again at Flanagan's Pub.

At the party, he said they conversed about whether a note she had written in the guest book referred to him. He said the woman later told him that she was referring to him when she wrote the note which implied that she had dumped him after a sexual encounter.

The man said he met the woman again at Flanagan's when he was looking for some friends.

He said they talked for a short while and he decided to go home because he had not met up with his friends.

"She asked me if I was going up to Oasis (nightclub) and I said I wasn't going to bother. She said it was pointless for me to drive all that way into town just to go home again.

"I told her I lived in town and she asked me where. Then we described where we each lived.'' "She told me that I lived just around the corner from her.'' The man said after this, he turned and left, and the woman followed him and asked him to wait for her when he reached the bottom of the stairs.

He said he walked her home and she pointed to where she lived and asked him to come up for a cup of coffee, but he said he turned down the offer and went home.

Just before he left her, the man said the woman told him that she may have lost her keys and that she was going to have to get into to her apartment through the bathroom window.

The man said that the next time he met the woman was on the night of the alleged incident.

He said he had spent part of his evening at the Oasis Club and was walking home when he passed by her apartment and wondered if she was home.

From the balcony he said he could see her lying diagonally across her bed fully dressed.

"I knocked on the window and called her and she said `through the window'. I took that to mean she had lost her keys again and that I was to come in through the bathroom window.'' He said he climbed through the bathroom window and knocked over the cosmetics on the shelf which made a lot of noise.

Once inside he said he took off his shoes and socks and tapped her gently on the shoulder to wake her up.

"Her eyes were half closed, and I asked her if she wanted a coffee and she said `mmm' which I took to mean yes.

"I went to the kitchen to look for the coffee but I couldn't find any.

"I shook her again and she woke up with her eyes wide and told me to get out...I told her who it was but she said: `You're married, get out.' ''
