Gail Simons, 38, and Tanya Smith, 27, took the money from a man they were staying with in St. David's in August.

Prosecutor Sgt. Wilbert McLean said the pair removed Keith Richardson's wallet from his pants. It contained $266 in cash, a driver's licence and personal papers.

Sgt. McLean said both women initially denied the offence.

Smith later said the money was split between them. She needed it to buy drugs.

Mr. Mark Pettingill, defending, said the pair admitted they had drug problems.

They intended going to drug rehabilitation programmes.

Senior Magistrate the Wor. Will Francis fined the women $300 each, after they admitted theft.

CRASH INJURY CTS A 40-year-old Pembroke man is under intensive care at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital after a road crash in Devonshire.

The man suffered chest injuries when his car collided with a truck on Middle Road on Wednesday evening, near the Sousa estate.

The truck driver was not thought to have been injured, said Police spokesman P.c. Gary Venning.

DOGS BANNED ALS Dogs are not allowed on the new Shelly Bay playground, the Department of Parks reminded the public yesterday.

"It has come to our attention that people are bringing their dogs to the playground,'' director Mr. Bill Cook said. "Dogs are not permitted in the playground area. To ensure the safety of the children and enjoyable use of the playground for all, we are asking for dog owners' cooperation in this matter.'' HOTELS RAIDED CRM A sneak thief snatched about $900 in cash from a couple at Elbow Beach Hotel.

The intruder slipped into the couple's cottage through an open sliding door. A handbag containing $200, and personal items, was stolen from another room.

Stonington Beach Hotel was also targeted on Wednesday. This time a watch and wallet, valued together at $225, were stolen.

"Once again an open sliding glass door appears to be the point of access,'' said Police spokesman P.c. Gary Venning.

DRIVER BANNED CTS Drink-driver Angel Esteban-Tejedor, of Bostock Hill, Paget, was fined $450 yesterday and taken off the road for 12 months.

Prosecutor Sgt. Wilbert McLean told Magistrates' Court Police saw Esteban-Tejedor riding his bike erratically on Front Street in the early hours of November 8.

He said Police also noticed Esteban-Tejedor was riding without a crash helmet.

Esteban-Tejedor, who admitted driving while impaired, told Senior Magistrate the Wor. Will Francis his helmet had been stolen.

MAN HITS EX-WIFE CTS Derek Simons, 37, of First Avenue, Pembroke, was fined $300 in Magistrates' Court after he admitted assaulting his ex-wife.

Prosecutor Sgt. Wilbert McLean said the couple got into a row on July 18 at Simons' home.

During the dispute, Simons struck his former wife with a telephone, he added.

Simons told the court his ex-wife no longer lived with him.

RUDE AWAKENING CTS Allan Outerbridge had a rude awakening after dozing off in an old Court Street building.

He was arrested for trespassing, and yesterday appeared in Magistrates' Court.

Outerbridge, 42, of no fixed abode, was given a six months conditional discharge after he admitted the offence.

Prosecutor Sgt. Wilbert McLean said no trespassing signs were clearly displayed at the building. Outerbridge was caught sleeping there on October 20.

BRIDGE CLOSED TRA The St. George's swing bridge will be closed to boats from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

today. A Works and Engineering Ministry spokesman apologised for the closure, saying it was needed so that work could be carried out on the bridge.
