The Census office issued a statement appealing to the public after its enumerators had encountered problems with non-Bermudians who were reluctant to respond to the survey.

Janet Smith-Bradshaw, superintendent of Census, said some people did not think the Census applied to them because they were not Bermudian, but she added that it applied to everyone living on the Island.

"It happened on various occasions,'' she said. "In some cases the enumerator came back to their supervisor, who sent them back to explain to the person that they were required to respond.'' She added that it was a legal requirement to comply.

In addition, the Census office is looking for enumerators to work in the Central and Western parishes.

Training will be given on June 14 and interested people are asked to call 297-7761 by Friday.

Mr. Butterfield also clarified that Dame Lois was on the ship to have dinner and had not cruised down from Philadelphia.

SHIP LEAVES ST. GEORGE'S SHI Ship leaves St. George's High winds expected this morning forced the Horizon to shift to Hamilton from St. George's last night.

Winds in excess of 25 knots and a small craft warning would have made transit of the narrow Town Cut out of St. George's Harbour impossible today.

A collective decision was made by the Marine and Ports operations division, the chief pilot and the Captain of the vessel yesterday.

The ship pulled out from the Ordnance Island dock at 7.45 p.m. and arrived in Hamilton around 8.30 p.m.

Magistrates' Court heard that an off-duty Police officer saw Atlino Lima Madeiros driving erratically along Middle Road in Paget at about 2.40 a.m. on June 1.

He was stopped and detained until a uniformed officer arrived and took the 26-year-old Fairvate Lane, Paget man to Hamilton Police Station where he was tested and found to have 105 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood.

Maderios later admitted to officers that he had four drinks at Oasis Nightclub before driving home.

He admitted driving while impaired but asked for leniency. "The boss needs me to drive the guys around. If it's possible, can I keep my truck's licence?'' But Mr. King replied: "The law is clear. If you plead guilty to driving while intoxicated, the Magistrate is obligated to disqualify you.''
