Bedroom furniture dumped ERROR RG P4 5.9.1996 Works and Engineering's waste pick-up service number is 292-7454, not 297-7454 as reported in a story in

A Works and Engineering official has reminded the public that illegal dumping could result in fines of up to $1,000.

The warning came after bedroom furniture was found last week by the roadside on Vesey Street in Devonshire.

An irate member of the public, who brought the incident to The Royal Gazette's attention said: "It's disgusting and unnecessary. If they can drive to Vesey Street why can't they drive over the hill to the Tynes Bay facility.'' The woman, who did not wish to be identified, also noted that bags of household garbage were frequently left at the same site.

When contacted Works and Engineering waste education and enforcement officer Jane Brett said the furniture would be picked up, but she doubted any legal action would be taken.

"Even if there is evidence at the site, it would not be enough to prosecute someone,'' Ms Brett said. "We would almost have to catch them in the act to do anything about it.'' However, she pointed out if someone was caught, they could be fined up to $1,000.

Keep Bermuda Beautiful administrator Vanese Flood said Works and Engineering could probably help to reduce illegal dumping by publishing information about its large waste pick-up service more often.

She added that Works and Engineering's large household waste pick-up service was free and anyone who wanted more information about it should call 297-7454.
